11 Weeks & Vet Update

As you may have seen, Sage and Ginger were featured on The Daily Kitten! Every day they feature a new adorable kitten, and it's a great place to check out if you like kittens. Here is a little visual progress report on the cuties:

They had their second vet appointment yesterday. They were much better during the car ride, and more comfortable in the vets office. Sage weighs 2.7 pounds, and Ginger is at 3.2 pounds! They got their second set of shots and dewormer. The vet declared them healthy again, but did mention that Sage has a pretty big head for his size, which may indicate that he has hydrocephalus, or water on the brain. She told us that it seems unlikely, and almost didn't mention it. He is showing no neurological deficits at all (she told us to look for stumbling, clumsiness, lethargy, or anything out of the ordinary) and has high energy. His fontanel is closed, which means he probably doesn't have hydrocephalus, because the increased pressure would have kept it open, and we would be able to feel a soft spot. His head also is not characteristically dome-shaped, his eyes aren't spread apart or down, so the only reason we need to look out for symptoms is because he has a big head. The vet said that most likely, he will just be a big cat. She also said that Sage's head could just be big compared to Ginger, and assured us there wasn't anything to be concerned about unless Sage starts showing other symptoms, and even if that happens, with treatment, he would have a pretty good likelihood of living a very happy, healthy life.

To me, it just looks like he has a big head in proportion to his body. 

They are very happy kittens, and their energy has not subsided in the least!

Kitten Update: 10 weeks

This kittens are doing great. Sage is still just as easy going as ever, and Ginger is turning out to be the trouble-maker.
They had their first vet appointment a few weeks ago. They didn't really like the car ride, but they were very well behaved once we got there. The vet gave them a distemper shot, and treated them both for the fleas they had. They tested negative for Feline Leukemia, and the vet gave them a clean bill of health.
We were out of town for a week, which was really hard. We asked our good friend Liana to take care of them while we were gone. They have grown so much since we left.
Today we bought them collars so they can start getting used to them. They aren't old enough or big enough to wear them all the time, so we will only put them on while we are around to supervise them. They aren't really thrilled with the concept. We hope they get used to the collars so we can step up to a harness, and then we will be able to take them outside to play. It's the best alternative to letting them loose, which we can't do.

Now Sage seems to be pretty okay with the idea of a collar. I don't know 
about Ginger, because she's sleeping at the moment.

Introducing...

Sage and Ginger!

We brought the kittens home last Sunday! Both were a little frightened at first, but when we opened the carrier they were in, Sage bravely ventured out. In about 60 seconds he made himself right at home. He loves to be petted and loved and cuddled. His sister Ginger was very timid at first. She wouldn't let us touch her and hissed when we came near. We were patient with her, and when I made a mewing sound, she decided to come out of the crate. For the first few days, she still shrugged away from human touch, but she and her brother ran around the house playing like crazy, and she seemed very content to be here as long as we stayed away from her. We started trying to bribe her to like us by feeding her salmon from our hands, which she surprisingly accepted without much hesitation. When she was sleepy, she would let her guard down and begin to purr and rub against our hands if we petted her. Today I offered her some fish from my lap, and all of a sudden she climbed up my leg and ate out of my hand. After that, her whole attitude towards us has changed! Now she is friendly and will play and let us pet her without a food bribe.
Both kittens are perfectly fine with using the litter box, and we only had one accident on the very first day.  Unfortunately, they both have fleas. We have an appointment this Saturday to take care of that problem, and to get their first vaccinations. Without further ado, here are some kitty photos:
